Izzy asks :

I've tried to lose weight for the last 3 years but still I'm not perfect. I've self harmed and have turned into a nervous, sobbing wreck. I cry myself to sleep and can't seem to be happy. Im sixteen! How can I get out of this?

Yin replies

You are not alone in thinking that your body is not perfect. Most women have something that they dislike about themselves; the most important thing is that you are healthy, so as long as you are a healthy bmi, then no one can tell you otherwise. If you are struggling to lose the weight go and see your doctor who can put you in touch with a nutritionist who will make meal plans for you in order to help you stick to a good diet. Do not attempt crash diets, if you are emotionally unbalanced at the moment then omitting food groups from your diet will only make you crave things like sugar and then you will crash, which will exacerbate your symptoms.

Yang replies

In terms of the self-harming, you do need to speak to someone about this. Again your doctor can arrange counselling to talk through the reasons why you have comfort eaten in the past and perhaps still are. If you are crying yourself to sleep at night then this is no way to live. If you don’t feel ready for the doctor perhaps try Samaritans who offer 24 hours support and then you can talk to someone about it first over the phone to make you more comfortable in sharing your feelings. You are only young; getting this under control now will help you enormously down the line.
