Laura asks :

Hi Lucy,

I really hope you can help me. I have what is known as "Tuberous Breast Syndrome" basically meaning my breasts didn't form properly, they droop despite my young age, I have very little at all and what I do have is wide-set. This was noted at the age of 16, as my Mother and in fact ALL the females in my family have it. I am now 26. I work in the entertainment business, and have to truss myself up in two bra's to get even a passable look in my clothes, and I get offers to work as a pinup as "you have a fantastic figure". All smoke and mirrors I don't even want to undress in front of my husband and cry if I look down in the shower. I've looked into surgery, but that at current rates would take me over 10 years to save for, a prospect not something I feel I can face.

Agony Aunts on Female First

Hi Laura,

If you feel surgery is too much or you to face then it might be a matter of working on your self-esteem. You could call in at your doctors and ask for a referral to a professional to help you try and alter the way you see your body. It might be worth giving this a try.

If all the females in your family have it then it is possible that you have a good support system in place who understand how you feel and hopefully who are able to give you some advice on helping to overcome insecurity.

Perhaps you could talk to your husband about it. If its taboo between you then it might be time to ask him how he feels about your body. You might find that he is not as preoccupied by it as you and that he loves you just as you are. You have had it since you were sixteen and he married you- so it seems that he doesn’t have an issue with your breasts and that he loves you because you’re you.

If you have hidden your body away from him for so long then maybe showing him your breasts more might help you both see them as something that you don’t have to be ashamed of- that they are a part of you that makes you distinctive.

Maybe a good bra fitter would help you find something that is more practical than wearing two bras, which sounds very uncomfortable for you. Perhaps if you felt more confident in your clothes you wouldn’t think about your breasts as much when you are working and out and about.
