He likely didn’t tell you the day before and made the date because he couldn’t tell you the truth, as it is always hard to break up with someone. It will be hard to be friends after being a couple, there is no denying that, but if you were friends before and you miss his company there is no reason why you can’t be friends afterwards.

If you do decide to be friends, then you will have to deal with if he gets another girlfriend down the line. So focus on looking for someone new and try not to dredge up the past with him when you are hanging out or this will drive him further away.
