Katie asks :

Hi Lucy,

My friends have all decided to book a holiday in Cyprus; I can't go because of Mandibular Osteotomy surgery this year! I'm incredibly jealous of them and they won't stop talking about it. What can I do?

Our Reply

Hi Katie,

The important thing to remember is that there will be other years and other holidays. You will get the opportunity again to go away with them.

Perhaps be honest with them and ask them to dial back the holiday chatter while they are around you. You should expect it some extent, as it’s only natural that they are excited about it. But if it’s taking over every conversation, then it is not unreasonable to ask them to calm it down.

Even if you were to go right after surgery, it would seriously impact your enjoyment of the holiday- so the likelihood is that you will get more out a holiday next year when you are all healed.

While they are on holiday try to keep yourself busy. If you sit around and think about how jealous you are of them you will have a miserable time. Make plans with your other friends or family and keep your mind distracted.

The time they are away will go over quickly and before you know it they will be back and you can start planning your 2015 holiday together!
