The Rite

The Rite has toppled No Strings Attached from the top of the U.S. box office as the romantic comedy spent just a single week at number one.

The film sees a return to the big screen for Anthony Hopkins as the movie took $15 million to see off the challenge from Natalie Portman’s latest project.

Directed by Mikael Håfström the movie follows an American priest travels to Italy to study at an exorcism school.

No Strings Attached had to settle for second spot, taking a further $13.7 million. The second and final new entry inside the top ten came at three in the form of The Mechanic.

The Mechanic is a remake of the 1972 classic with Jason Statham leading a cast of Ben Foster, Donald Sutherland and Tony Goldwyn.

The Green Hornet was down two at number four while The King’s Speech slipped just a single place to remain in the top five at number five.

True Grit also fell just a single place from five to this week’s number six. Comedy The Dilemma was this week’s biggest faller as it dropped four places out of the top five to number seven.

Oscar contender Black Swan was also down falling two places from six to number eight while The Fighter also dropped two places.

Yogi Bear rounded off the top ten having dropped just a single place from last week.
