Drinking green tea can aid weight loss

A new study has looked at animal models of obesity and found that, as expected, when given green tea they put on less weight than when compared to controls.

The study then went onto to look in depth at how the tea might work and discovered that it had the capability to alter gene expression in the liver of the (the liver plays an important role in breaking down fat). It was found that tea extracts have more than one method to help us shed pounds, with a double mode of attack that enables it to affect genes linked to energy expenditure (metabolism) as well as those linked to appetite suppression. Interestingly it was also found that genes relating to the body’s production of anti-oxidants were also up regulated (it is said that green tea contains large amounts of anti-oxidants in itself, but now it also appears it can also up regulate the body’s natural production of them).

This study shows that green tea deserves all the hype it has received as a weight loss remedy and that it could in fact be even more potent than first thought, increasing both the metabolism and reducing appetite.
