Start your day with a healthy breakfast

We’re told to eat like a King (or Queen) at breakfast, though so many of us still use this time of day to stock up on empty carbs and nasty sugars that’ll see us raiding the biscuit tin way before lunch break.

Wheat products can sometimes seem unavoidable at breakfast – cereal, toast, pastries – but there are better foods to kickstart your day with. Wheat may be the stodge you crave in the mornings, but your body won’t thank you for it. Wheat converts quickly to sugar and then fat - and that’s without all the added sugar in your cereals and jams.

So here are a few tasty, nutritious and filling breakfast ideas to help you kickstart your day:

Bircher Museli

You can even make your own version of this popular morning cereal - we love our ‘overnight oats’! Take rolled oats with sliced apple and pear (or whatever fruit, nuts and raisins take your fancy) then soak it all in some agave syrup or apple juice overnight in a bowl. Eat with soya yoghurt the next morning. Delicious as a snack any time of day, and full of good fibre and protein.

Eggs

How do you like your eggs in the morning? Get some proper protein down you first thing with a boiled egg and toasted rye bread soldiers, yummy scrambled eggs with a bit of spinach and cayenne pepper, or a poached egg on smoked salmon – our favourite. Superb brain food for the day ahead, and super quick and easy.

Yogurt

Or how about a simple probiotic yogurt with nuts and berries for a fruity pick-me-up with all the right fats? We love ours with goji berries and flaxseed. Soak the flaxseeds in water overnight – the combination with probiotic yogurt is great for soothing tummy troubles. Also makes a healthy pudding if you’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth after lunch.

Green Juice

And for those in a rush, grab a cold pressed green juice before you head out the door. Oxygenating and full of chlorophyll, pressed juices retain the goodness of their ingredients by savouring the nectar straight from the pulp. Pressing – rather than chopping or blending – doesn’t degrade the fruit or vegetable and avoids over heating it and zapping away minerals. Try courgette, broccoli, lemon, apple and fennel for a zesty morning kick.
