Women in the new survey have criticised men for their gift buying abilities which often leave women feeling unvalued and self-conscious rather than appreciated and loved.

Some of the biggest faux pas when it comes to buying a woman gifts were buying underwear which was unsuitable for a number of reasons, buying cleans products and buying workout clothes or DVDs.

John Starr for Gift Card and Voucher Week, which commissioned the study said, “Buying presents for women is clearly a minefield, and men have little chance of getting it right every single time.

“Even the most thoughtful of presents can be received with caution by women, who seem to assume that with every gift comes a hint.

“It looks like men should avoid buying anything for his partner to wear, all toiletries and perfume, anything for the house or kitchen, or anything exercise related – that doesn’t leave a lot!”

The gifts that make women the most furious with her man are vacuum cleaners, car cleaning kits, saucepan sets and underwear.

Added to that are films that he wants to watch or music that he thinks she would like but actually doesn’t.

Other gifts such as sex toys, exercise clothes, anti-aging products and luggage are also among the hated gifts.

Over half of women admitted to opening a present from their other half and thinking ‘what the hell where they thinking?’ and one is six have had a huge row over a bad gift.

One in 20 couples have even split up due to a particularly bad gift!

Nearly half of women think that men get it so wrong simply because they hate shopping and a third of women think it’s due to the fact that men get embarrassed when in a women’s shop.

Likely, 80 per cent of women do think that their partner genuinely tries but still manages to get it painfully wrong.

Nearly 40 per cent of women admit to presenting their partner with a list to choose from so they are in no danger of getting it wrong.

John continues, “The fact of the matter is that in most cases, women love to shop, and men don’t.

“So when men come to buy presents they are entering a relatively unknown territory and struggle to find things their partner might like.

“It would make total sense for men to opt for gift cards and vouchers for their partner, which means she can go shopping, and he’s not on the verge of being dumped for getting it wrong yet again.”

It’s not just the men getting it wrong, 21 per cent of men said that their ladies never get it right either.

Men complained that women tended to buy them clothes that hated and would opt to buy them cheaper gadgets rather than the best ones on the market.

Men also hated it when women chose to buy shoes for them as men say they only need one pair of shoes, any more is unnecessary.
