Only One In Six Cuddles Lead To Sex

Scientists from the University of Michigan have found that cuddling most likely won’t lead to sex as most use the cuddle as an opportunity to share their day with their partner.

But men, don’t be downtrodden, the study also found that couples who do cuddle more have better sex lives.

The researchers conducted the study to find out how long people hug for, how often they do it and what they feel when they do it.

The study, which featured it the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior, defined a hug to be an “intimate, physical and loving contact that does not involve sexual behaviour and that involves some degree of whole body touching, not just hand to hand or lips to lips”.

The average cuddle was found to last 47 minutes and 36 seconds and was either followed by talking, a massage, listening to music or reading.

Only one in six couples said that hugging was most likely to lead to sex.

The favoured time to cuddle up was in the evening and the most popular topic of conversation was to talk about each other’s day.

Researcher Dr Sari van Anders said, “Men and women reported feeling nurtured, protective and relaxed after cuddling and rarely mentioned sex when questioned about what they did or felt during cuddling, but talked about love, intimacy, closeness and comfort.”
