Don't let an ex ruin your love life - get rid of all that emotional baggage!

Brand new research out today has revealed that half of all UK singles are currently suffering from a broken heart! A further 27 per cent admit that they have only recently recovered from a break up, and for more than one in five this sadness normally lasts between six months and a year.

DatingDirect polled over 1,000 UK singles and discovered that a 88 per cent can recall a time when they have spent far too long agonising over an ex, with a shocking 18 per cent admitting that they 'always' mourn a past relationship for too long. 73 per cent even admit that they have annoyed a friend by harping on about an ex for an unnecessarily long period of time.

To mark National Dating Day singles across the nation should re-instate 'that loving feeling' by calling for an 'Ex Amnesty'. Empowered singletons are being encouraged to ditch any redundant memorabilia associated with an ex, and London singles are even being given the chance to unite and rid themselves of their memories in a giant pink branded skip! The skip will be touring the capital on National Dating Day in a bid to stop singles mourning that lost love and get them confidently back on the singles market.

The research showed that broken hearted singles aren't making it easy for themselves - three quarters (75 per cent) have been known to keep hold of reminders of their ex, even though they knew it was hindering their recovery process. The most popular items people are likely to keep include: Photos of their ex (29 per cent), Love letters (14 per cent), Jewellery (13 per cent), Cuddly toys (9 per cent), Event memorabilia / ticket stubs (7 per cent).

After a significant break-up, one in five singles (19 per cent) do not feel ready to date again until after six months to a year has gone by. A further 10 per cent state they wouldn't be ready even after a year - let's hope Ex-Amnesty can change this!
