Couple texting on their smart phones

Couple texting on their smart phones

As someone who sits on the sofa at the end of a working day and checks my emails, Ebay, Cineworld and Facebook apps on my phone while my partner seeks out Nine Gag and You Tube opposite me, it got me wondering why are we not taking to one another? Then I text him to say stop being so antisocial rather than just opening my mouth! What has the world and my relationship come too?

It has been found that this kind of nightly habit is causing problems in a third of relationships.

22% of people involved in the study admitted to using gadgets like smartphones, compared to 26% who said that their partners use them more then they do, 37% revealed that both of them use smartphones and 15% said that they didn’t really use them at all.

When asked if they thought it was detrimental to their relationship 10% said all the time. But how? Could it be that they are on their phone while you are trying to talk about your day? Or that they have their sound on loud while you are trying to watch your favourite TV programme or could it be that they are answering their phone during sex?

Unfortunately, for 34% of the repsondants, this had caused a big argument between the couple.

Despite the smartphone being blamed for the most annoying tech habit, other gadgets got a slamming too, such as social media addiction, texting, console gaming  and handheld gaming.

14% had even considered leaving their partner over this addiction, with 12% revealing that their partner knew nothing about their annoyance and 34 % said probably not, so it would indicate that their social skills are blossoming outside of their relationship to the detriment of the state of their love life behind closed doors.

Leon Edwards, Managing Director of Versapak, had the following comment:

"There are many causes of contention in relationships. But looking at the results of our survey, is there a requirement to update the clichés of frustration over a one sided role in the house work, or too much time spent on certain activities such as sports? Perhaps technology is edging its way into the bargain as a potential argument stereotype for the future.”

He continued:

“A Banish Bag can help to combat this as a problem. If one partner is concerned about the other’s reliance or obsession on tech, then a couple of hours in the bag may give both parties a welcome break! Frustrated partners can attain a level of control over the problem and help to maintain household harmony as both sides can rest easy in the knowledge that the annoying gadget is stored safely out of reach. For the time being at least!”
