Couples all over the world have just celebrated Valentine’s Day but that doesn’t mean that there’s no trouble in paradise.

In fact, a shocking 72 per cent of women say that their partner irritates them on a regular basis.

Despite people often thinking that it is men that become more irritated with their partner, it’s actually the women that have a shorter patience span as only 59 per cent of men said they are regularly irritated by their partner.

The research by NatCen Social Research shows that with age comes patience as couples who have lived together and been in a relationship longer have fewer irritations with their partner.

Only 29 per cent of people aged between 16 and 34 say their partners don’t get on their nerves at all, compared with 30 per cent of 35-54 year olds, 35 per cent of 55-64 year olds and 40 per cent of people aged over 65.

When it comes to have a shoulder to cry on, 96 per cent of people said that their partner with provide that for them in some way.

We all look for a partner who we can rely on and it seems that we’re on the right track as 98 per cent of us feel we can rely on our partner in some way.

This also become better with age,  74 per cent of over 65s say their partners never let them down, compared with 65 per cent of 16-34 year olds and 35-54 year olds and 67 per cent of 55-64 year olds.

“Our research shows that how much couples can share their worries or rely on each other is key to whether a relationship lasts and Valentine’s Day is an excellent opportunity to reflect on whether we are doing enough to support our partners.”
