Men have acquired the reputation of being the ‘bad guy’ when it comes to break ups thanks to the big screen, however men more often play by the rules when it comes to breaking up with their partner, unlike women according to Mobiles.co.uk.

A whopping 60% of men end their relationship face to face or over the phone, compared to only 55% of women who opt for texting, Twitter, Facebook or email.

94% of men also like to do the break up cleanse pretty soon after it’s all over, deleting their ex’s number from their phone within a month. Those who hold onto the number often do so in the hope that they might one day be an item again.

Women focus more on social media, unfriending their exs and removing all photo evidence of their time spent together. Less men do this, however both sexes agree that it’s to make a fresh start as well as the comfort of knowing that their ex can’t spy on what they are doing now newly single.

Women and men who are most guilty of holding on to their exs phone number live in Manchester and Cardiff, however, they differ considerably in how they break up with their partners. Mancunians opt for the personal touch and meet up with their partner to break the news, whereas those in Cardiff are a little more cautious and do it over the phone- perhaps to avoid making a scene in public. Londoners are the most likely to tell their partner their fate over social media- let’s hope that it’s in private message and not through a status change!

18-24 year olds are the most guilty of calling their ex-to-be and announcing the news, however the older they get it seems the more cowardly people become with more over 24s avoiding any sort of conversation or meeting, preferring to do the deed over Facebook or Twitter.

Abby Francis, Social Media and Mobile Expert for Mobiles.co.uk, commented on the results: “Relationships can be tricky enough without technology getting in the way, so we wanted to see just how big a role it plays in break-ups."

"It’s surprising to see how different people and age groups use social media when the road to romance gets a bit rocky – and that younger people don’t always go down the most modern route to becoming single. It’s nice to see that we haven’t forgotten other methods, like the good old-fashioned phone call, when it’s now so easy to let the ‘un-friend’ button do the talking on social media.”
