In fact, new research from Odeon shows that nearly a third of first dates at the cinema go on to be lasting relationships.

The cinema is perfect for a date because there isn’t too much pressure on either of you.

Unlike with a romantic meal or a romantic stroll, there isn’t the pressure to have constant conversation in the cinema, which takes a weight of your shoulders.

There won’t be any awkward silences although you’ll be able to cut in and whisper in each other’s ears when you need to – perfect!

The gentleman will usually let the lady choose the film and then you’re basically half way to a great date.

Although, the film tastes may be a little different with Odeon finding that men would prefer to watch Comedy and women would prefer to go with a Rom-Com.

There are a few do’s and don’ts to follow when having a first date at the cinema though, here are Odeon’s suggestions –

1. Stay clear of the baked beans ahead of your cinema date ladies and gentlemen – 25 per cent of women found men breaking wind in the cinema the biggest turn off and 20 per cent of men likewise.

2. If you’re feeling tired choose a film where 3D glasses are required – 15 per cent of women found their date falling asleep during a film a big turn off, but men were even more affronted at 22 per cent - use the specs to hide those tired eyes!

3. Keep the verdict to friends under wraps until after the date has finished – 12 per cent of people found texting during a film a definite no-no.

4. It might be a low lit room but keep your eyes firmly on the screen – 10 per cent of people found eyeing up someone else when on a date a big turn off.

5. Shut your mouth, even if the popcorn is delicious – 9 per cent of people found being on a date at the cinema with someone who chews too loudly a big turn off, so remember small mouthfuls, and watch that crunch!
