Unless you're incredibly lucky, finding 'Mr Right' can be a long trial of 'Mr Horribly-Wrongs' and dreadful first dates. There's internet dating sites where everyone seems to be lacing their profiles with far less fact and a large helping of fiction. Then those friends who "Know someone that would be perfect for you..." and leave you wondering whether they really know you at all, or worse don't even like you!?!

But would it help to know what the other half are looking for? Hen party website GoHen conducted a survey to find out exactly what men and women are looking for in prospective partners with some surprising results.

The Look

While women voted heavily in favour of a David Beckham style physic (73% preferring an athletic beau), guys that have been spending far too long in the gym might be doing so in vain with the 'Body Builder' type trailing in lower than 'Cuddly' chaps (9.1% - 13.1%).

Men on the other hand expressed a preference for a fuller figure like Holly Willoughby (49%) rather than the (allegedly) cosmetically enhanced Kim Kardashian (11%).

Just Good Friends

While 30% of women really care what their friends think, only 15% of guys would worry about their best friend's opinion of a new girlfriend.

Just the Job

Perhaps most surprising in the survey was the job section. 35% of women and 22% of men said their prospective other half's occupation was a consideration but it was the most/least popular jobs that caught our eye.

Jobs women found most attractive were;

  • Doctor
  • Lawyer
  • Fireman

The least attractive jobs were;

  • Bin Man
  • Politician
  • Stripper

Although it also turned out pig farmer, undertaker and porn star all rated higher than estate agent or banker. Other unpopular jobs included gynaecologist, pimp and 70s radio DJ.

Jobs men found most appealing were;

  • Teacher
  • Nurse
  • Model

The least favourable included;

  • Cleaner
  • Fast Food Worker
  • Stripper

Other dream jobs men were looking for included tattoo artists, clown and 'Birmingham City FC ticket office worker'. However female long distance lorry drivers, tax inspectors and traffic wardens all might want to consider a change of vocation after getting a resounding thumbs down.

To Do Lists

In our spare time the things men and women hoped would be high on their partner's list of priorities were far more in keeping with traditional gender stereotypes with men rating 'baking' highest and 'DIY' lowest, while women want a man who was 'hands on' with 'DIY' most attractive and surprisingly 'artistic' men came in last.

The survey also covered, shared aspirations and ambitions, family and friends, hobbies and pastimes, looks and physique, even the least desirable names for the prospective "Mrs…". Pratt was the least popular of names to be saddled with in your married life, and Smith came lower down the poll than Hiscock or Ramsbottom.

GoHen's Head of Digital Content Andy Viveash said "From the most attractive hair to the best bums, our no holds barred dating survey found some modern indicators of what both men and women consider to be the perfect beau. While there is no science to love, it's certainly interesting to know what the other half might be thinking."

And it turns out if you're a long distance lorry driver with a bottom like Kim Kardashian who loves DIY, you might want to 'get creative' with your own online dating profile.
