What do you do when a sad mood strikes?

What do you do when a sad mood strikes?

In relationships, when one is down the other one ideally needs to be supportive and a quick thinker when it comes to cheering the other up.

Today is National do a grouch a favour day- so if you find that the January blues is dragging your partner down into February and you are living with a total ogre right now, and then here are some things to get them in a good mood again.

Walking- It may the last thing that they want to do, but it will get them up, out of the house and generating some endorphins or happy hormones in their body- which can only be a good thing. The fresh air will clear away some of those cobwebs and you have some time to talk about what’s getting them down.

Cinema- There is nothing like a bit of distraction and escapism to cheer someone up. A couple of hours in the dark can do wonders for someone’s mood- more so if you take them to a romantic movie or something that portrays someone in a less fortunate position. This can remind them of how lucky they are to have you and the life they lead- thus bringing them out of a slump.

Organising- If you have pile soft paperwork to be filed, photographs to be sorted through or cupboards to be cleaned out- get them on board. Sometimes the environment they are surrounded by can make a them feel down, so making it tidy and in order is an instant boost.

Decorating/ house improvements- Spending time on doing up your home is a great moment to bond- you can go out and get everything you need and use that time while you are stripping the walls to talk about whatever’s on your mind. It’s wonderfully therapeutic as long as you don’t argue over the choice of decor.

Gardening- Now the weather is improving- it’s time to break out the lawn mower, the weed extraction device and the garden rake. It can really raise the mood in the house when you look out and see a neatly tended to garden, rather than a pile of rubble and dead foliage from the harsh winter months. Why not try growing your own veg patch or some herbs and give your garden some purpose again?

Take a drive- If your partner doesn’t feel like walking, then a drive to somewhere new can help. This gets them away from their bed, or couch and out into the countryside. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of all the natural beauty that’s on our doorstep, to make us feel a little perkier.

Cooking- Cooking can seem like Everest when you are not in the mood, however, once out get going this can be a great way to feel you have achieved something with the day- plus you can enjoy the benefits afterwards with a delicious evening meal.

Picnics- Even as adults, picnics can be so much fun because it takes you back to your youth. Preparing sandwiches and snacks and then finding the perfect spot to spread out and watch the world go by from is a great tool for getting the romance and spontaneity back into your relationship; giving your partner something to smile about.

Favourite place- Wherever it is- take them along- a view from the top of a hill, a shop, a restaurant- wherever is guaranteed to strike a chord with them- take them to that place and hopefully it will have its usual effect.

Catch up with family or friends- Sometimes they just need a giggle and a gossip with their friends and family. They know your partner almost as much as they know themselves- so they will have learned what it takes to makes your partner feel like themselves again.
