As someone who lives a long way from my mum- I understand the importance of the phone call or the text if a phone call is not appropriate. I am apparently not alone either- with 80% of women who have long conversations with their mums about everything from day to day stuff, work and relationships.

A quarter of women speak to their mum at least once a day, compared to only a fifth of men.

When it's all calculated up- women spend two days on the phone to their mums a year.

The Post Office found that men don't place as much importance on phone calls as women- spending just half an hour a week talking to their mothers or in total- five days a year.

One in ten men don't even instigate the call- generally it's their mum who calls them and it's often to remind them to do something.

One in five men say that they only call their mum when they need something from her and never just to talk for the sake of talking.

Staggeringly- 5% said that they never call their mum at all.

Professor Sir Cary Cooper, Manchester University

Professor Sir Cary Cooper, of Manchester University, said: "Women have always been more family centred and concerned about their children, siblings and parents.

"That women call their mums more often to find out how they are and to have a general chat, whereas men tend to call for a specific reason or to get information from their mother, reinforces women's more caring role."

He said a preference for texts and emails rather than the phone was a sad reflection on our times.

"Talking face-to-face or on the phone with people can help to build meaningful relationships, which can ultimately enhance our wellbeing," he added.
