Hi Lucy,

When I try to go to the toilet, nothing comes out. What do I do?

It sounds like you have constipation, however it all depends on how long you have had it for and how severe your symptoms are- it can often be rectified by lifestyle changes, however if you are in a lot of pain now then I would suggest going to your doctor.

At home, you could increase your intake of fibre, which should be at about 18-30g per day, which includes fruit, vegetables and cereals.

Bulking agents such as wheat bran can help makes your stools softer and therefore easier to pass.

Drink plenty of water so you avoid dehydration and try to take more exercise such as a walk after your meals.

Try placing a small stool under your feet when you go to the toilet so your knees are positioned above your hips as this helps things along.

Also if you are taking any medication then this could be causing it so it is worth a trip to your GP to find an alternative for you if this is the cause.

Once you are back on track always listen to your body and go when you need to, don't hold it in and stick with your body's natural rhythm.

If none of the above work, then your doctor may prescribe you with an oral laxative.
