Sue asks :

Hi Lucy,

How can I stop my husband from watching his laptop with his headphones on even when I say he can watch whatever he wants on TV?

If you feel that him being on his laptop is getting in the way of your relationship then perhaps you need to talk to him about it.

He may think that he’s doing you a favour by tuning out so you can watch what you want or so you can have some peace from conversation. If you feel that your communication is lacking as a result then maybe it’s time to tell him so.

It can be tempting to have some ‘alone time‘ and find a way to unwind after a day at work, which could be what he’s doing, however if this is taking up the entire night and intruding into you couple’s time then he might need to know.

It sounds like you need to reach a balance between letting him have some time to relax after work but also have some time to talk and not just be in the same room together. Maybe suggest that you snuggle up on the sofa and watch something together, to encourage him to put his laptop to one side and be more affectionate with you.

The good thing is that neither of you have to feel deprived if you can get this right. Hopefully you will both reach a point where you can enjoy your evenings and feel you have each got something out of them separately and together.
