Amber asks :

Hi Lucy,

I'm due to go on holiday later this year with my two friends. Both of them are different to me though in the sense they are quite loud and very confident. I can't drink for medical reasons and have explained this to them, however they have mentioned they would still want to go out on 'big nights' and I'm worried I'll feel excluded, like I sometimes do when we go out too. I don't want these feelings to stop a potentially fantastic holiday, but I can't shake these feelings at all!!! Some advice would be much appreciated! :)

If you don't drink then perhaps go out with them for the start of the night and leave when it begins to get messy. Being the only sober one while everyone else around you is drunk can be quite frustrating so maybe go back to your hotel when things start to get a bit crazy. If there is only you who doesn’t drink stick close to your complex then ask them to walk you back so they know you are safe. Perhaps have a couple of drinks with them in the hotel bar and when they move on you could go back to your room.

You might find that the atmosphere is enough to keep you out all night with them. Depending on the location and the company sometimes you don’t need a drink to have a good time- so maybe give it a chance and see how you feel after you have had a look around and got a feel for the place.

Or could you dodge the big nights out altogether and stay in the hotel? If it’s not every night then maybe you won’t feel too left out if you are there for the majority of the things you have planned. They will talk about their stories from the night before, however like anything else they will run their course and become old news eventually. Perhaps try to get them talking about the other things you do on your holiday so you have some stories to share by making your other activities memorable and fun!
