Kalla asks :

Hi Lucy,

I am currently 4 months and 2 weeks pregnant and I get the worst negative feelings ever. I can’t shake it. I don’t know why I feel like this or why I got them; it’s terrible. The best is, I feel like I did something wrong, but I don’t know what? This guilt is just staying in my head. Please HELP!!!! What can I do to ease this feeling?

Hi Kalla,

Your body is going through a tremendous amount of change right now. Your hormones will be all over the place which is likely responsible for making you feel so down. There are thoughts of your life before and your life after the baby comes and the feelings of the unknown if this is your first child. This is all perfectly normal.

I would suggest, perhaps finding a social group that is filled with mums to be, just like you, in all stages of pregnancy. This way you can talk to people who are going through exactly what you are and discuss any worries and thoughts you might have. A lot of mums find this helps after their child is born too, so if you benefit from it, then it might be something to continue afterwards. You may have a partner but they are never going to understand what you are going through, despite their best efforts to be supportive- so find those who do.

If this doesn’t help then I would suggest going to see the doctor. They might be able to recommend some counselling for you. It sounds like the thing you need to do here is talk. The moment you find someone to share your thoughts with and find out that they have had similar ones then the easier it should become. Pregnancy can be a solo activity if you let it; however it is important to set up that network of people around you to communicate your emotions to.
