Getting fit in the New Year

Getting fit in the New Year

From juicers to jogging bottoms, trainers to treadmills, Brits will spend over £2billion fighting the flab in the new year, according to research from shopping website VoucherCodes.co.uk.

As the country vows to kick start 2013 in better shape, nearly two thirds are planning on getting fit, with the average person spending £85.67 on new kit. Gym-loving guys will splash out a little more, spending £105.53 compared to just £68.90 spent by women.

The New Year health kick is set to begin on Monday 7th January, with most people planning on making their first trip to the gym that day. However, the study revealed our good intentions won’t last long with most fitness attempts lasting just 25 days, ending on 1st February.

Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk says: “The New Year is a great time to try out a new sport or fitness classes, however think carefully before forking out for a long-term membership. Lots of gyms will offer day-passes or week long trials so you can try them out at different times of the day and see whether they’ll be suited to you.

“Make sure you do your research to find out what equipment you need – proper trainers are essential to protect your joints if you plan to run, for example. And it’s worth doing your research when it comes to making a purchase too - there are lots of great codes for gym passes, workout equipment and nutrition sites in January so you can stick to your New Year’s health kick without over-stretching your bank balance."

The VoucherCodes.co.uk study found out that over two fifths are planning on eating more healthily, whilst over a fifth say they’ll take up a new sport to keep fit.  One in seven will buy a fitness DVD, whilst one in eight will download a fitness app to help them get them trim.

What will you be doing to get healthy?
