Have you ever tried the pole for fitness?

Have you ever tried the pole for fitness?

About 10 years  ago, the trend for pole dancing arose by women claiming that they do it for their own enjoyment. Shock, horror!!! Linked with the stripping industry it is now firmly connected to fitness and competition!

I first started it myself in LA where there are many celebrities who tout the virtues of pole dancing such as Teri Hatcher and Kate Hudson.

Two years ago I introduced it to my students at Italia Conti Arts Centre in Guildford to help improve their core strength and fitness. Choosing a great and alternative method of keeping fit at a professional Performing Arts College had our heads of department worried, however, the results speak for themselves.

Wow, what a work out it proved to be and the definition in their arms has been staggering….

It belongs in the category of performing arts. It involves performing moves, spins and acrobatic tricks with the use of a vertical pole.

It combines strength, flexibility, agility, balance, coordination and aerobic capacity. In simple words it provides fun, while giving you an all over body workout and all around fitness challenge.

To many people’s surprise as a sport/performing art and fitness regime this is practiced as much by men as it is by women. Pole dancing burns calories, tones those body muscles, increases flexibility and improves overall fitness.

There are many classes all over the UK including one run at the famous Pineapple studios by my friend Carly Wilford who also trains our students.

Pole dancing may have an uncharacteristic appeal, but the invigorating classes are powerful for strong women. You want to have fun with a few friends then try something different.

Roughly speaking and depending on the teacher, a good 1 hour pole class can burn 250-500 calories. Whilst fitness goals differ from person to person that’s not bad when you are having so much fun….. The average adult runner only burns approx. 10 calories per minute so this would seem a quick fix in the calorie counter…You can strut up one to two miles per class while dancing your way to a healthier, toner, stronger you! Not to mention, you can feel sexy & listen to a wonderful playlist of songs without your children/husband/boyfriend/parents intruding on your 1 hr of fitness! BOOM!

Yay! Team Hayley wins again…
