Several people have taken to social media to show pictures of empty shelves containing the rubber contraception pouches - which are meant for preventing sperm from getting into the vagina during sex.

One Twitter user, who goes by the name Siddharth Misra, shared an image of someone with a condom on their finger pushing an elevator button, and wrote: ''Condoms in Singapore sold out amidst coronavirus fear.

''Since Singaporeans have been using the condom as a protective measure when touching the elevator buttons in their apartments and other buildings to prevent being contaminated.''

Over in the UK, pharmacy stores Boots have been running out of hand sanitiser amid the outbreak of the virus.

A spokesperson told The Mirror Online: ''The best way to help prevent catching a virus is by making sure that you regularly wash your hands with soap, and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to prevent transmission from surfaces, especially after blowing your nose, sneezing and coughing.

''Antiviral hand foams and gel can also be useful when you are out and about.''
