The Mexican brewing company Grupo Modelo will stop producing the alcoholic beverage, which is exported to 180 other countries.

It comes after the Mexican government ordered the suspension of non-essential activities due to the global health crisis.

The brewer confirmed that it was already in the process of scaling down production before the suspension.

A statement read: ''If the federal government considers it appropriate to issue some clarification confirming beer as an agro-industrial product, at Grupo Modelo we are ready to execute a plan with more than 75 per cent of our staff working from home and at the same time guaranteeing the supply of beer.''

The drink's unfortunate name has become a punchline during the pandemic, and the company last month hit out at ''misinformation'' which suggested that the brand had been damaged by the outbreak of the virus.
