The unnamed individual was trying to rent out his dogs via Facebook to people wanting to get out of their house, as rules allow people out to walk a dog - but the plot was foiled by police.

A police spokeswoman in the Galicia region said: ''The man was advertising activities which implied people leaving their homes to rent dogs, or walk rented dogs.

''That would be infringing the decree that only permits going outdoors for work, groceries, walking your dog or pharmacy visits.''

Spain is currently in the midst of a nationwide lockdown in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus and the man now faces a fine of between 500 and 5,000 euros.
