That is according to new research conducted by OnBuy.com - the shopping marketplace - which found that 35 percent of Brits haven't read a book in the last five years.

And perhaps surprisingly, Kamini Thomas's Modern Kama Sutra has been named as the country's most popular book, ahead of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Cas Paton, the founder of OnBuy.com, said: ''Our research suggests the majority of adults would like to read more, so hopefully our list inspires some members of the public to pick up a book!

''It was also fascinating to see what books are the most popular in the UK, with the top ten including both classics and modern favourites - a great starting list for any new reader!''
