Officers in the town of Molina de Segura were dispatched to track down the animal after several panicked reports from locals, but they ultimately discovered it was actually just a large canine.

The confusion came about because the dog's back-half had been shaved to leave a mane of fur around its head. Its tail had also been trimmed back, leaving just a ball at the end.

The police force discovered that the 'lion' had been given a microchip and found out they were dealing with a dog, although it remains unclear why the dog had been given that haircut.

A police spokesperson told HuffPost: ''We're investigating and waiting for some results. We don't know the motive for shaving it that way. For now, there's no justifiable motive.''
