The building in Washington has been renovated during the coronavirus pandemic when five cans of beer and an open pack of gum were found behind the walls of the mystery section.

Library staff believe that the stash dates back 30 years after the packaging had a warning label urging customers to use it by the late 1980s.

Library director Erin Wells said: ''It looked like somebody had just stashed it there and maybe thought they could get it later ... but there was no way to get it out.

''There were probably six beers that they bought and there was only five that we found so they might not have been thinking straight when they did it.''
