The 73-year-old comedian and talk show host filed for conservatorship for his 77-year-old wife Mavis in January this year after she was diagnosed with "advanced dementia", with the goal of establishing a living trust to ensure she has "managed assets" to give her future care if her husband died.

According to a new court filing, her court appointed counsel Ronald Ostrin revealed she "sometimes does not know her husband, Jay, nor her date of birth".

In the report, which has been published by PEOPLE magazine and other outlets, it notes she "has a lot of disorientation, will ruminate about her parents who have both passed and her mother who died about 20 years ago".

Ostrin described Mavis - who married Jay in 1980 - as a "delightful person" with a "charming personality", while noting it "was clear she had cognitive impairment".

The counsel described the couple's relationshio as "long-term, loving and supportive", and he said Mavis sees her husband as "her protector", adding: "She trusts him."

The petntion for the conservatorship has Mavis' conset, as well as the support of her neurologist, Dr. Hart Cohen.

The doctor described Jay as "such a nice man", explaining that the former 'Tonight Show' host "treats her like gold".

Meanwhile Ostrin said he is a "standup guy", whose "private persona matches the public persona he projects".

Back in January, Jey had given an update on his wife's health battle.

He told the Daily Mail newspaper at the time: “She’s fine. Everybody’s good. We’re doing well.”

He also said he had filed for a conservatorship over Mavis to “set up a will, in case something happens”, and gave a thumbs-up to a cameraman as he drove away with some friends.
