As a celebrity ambassador for Fossil, Riverdale actor KJ Apa here discusses his love for the brand, as well as what he looks for when picking up new wristwear and more...

What made you want to partner with / support Fossil?

Fossil has a huge presence in New Zealand, so I was extremely familiar with the brand. My Dad always wore Fossil watches so I’ve known about them since I was a boy, just never thought I would ever be in a position to be the face of the brand. It is so cool to be able to work with a brand that was creating a campaign that I really believed in, and that has a huge presence in my home country.

What appeals to you about the brand?

Fossil has a little of everything. No matter what look you are going for, there is a style for everyone. I like the mix of classic and modern makes it very easy since I tend to not overthink the way I dress.

What makes the perfect everyday watch? Any particular style or features you prefer?

When it comes to style I am pretty easy going and prefer pieces that easily transition from a family BBQ to an event for work. I really like the touchscreen style- can't help but be a little bias but I was able to collaborate and design and watch dial based on my personal drawings.

This season we are celebrating authenticity, creativity and optimism. What do each of those words mean to you?

True authenticity is effortless. I don’t think you can try and be authentic. Creativity is different, it takes effort and intention. Optimism is also a practice, it’s something we can develop and grow. It all takes commitment.

We’re a watch company but we also care about the value of time. How do you make (your) time more meaningful and stay balanced in today’s fast-paced digital world?

This is probably my biggest life challenge right now. It’s really hard and I value my time more now than ever before because so little of it is my own. Meaningful time for me is about connecting with the people I care about. The longer the better....but even ten minutes can help me feel balanced and connected to what matters to me. Even small portions of time spent intentionally can make a huge difference in my day.

What inspired your smartwatch face design?

My Samoan heritage and my love of mark making.

How will you spend your upcoming time? Any upcoming (music) projects that you are looking forward to?

I’ve just started a huge canvas, my biggest yet. It will probably take me all year to complete. It’s great knowing I have a creative project waiting for me whenever I have a few moments.

What music are you listening to right now?

Jeff Buckley.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

I’m a mark-maker. I love pattern. For me it’s a form of relaxation. I prefer not to plan anything... I just begun and see where it goes.

How would you describe your style in 3 words?

Carefree, comfortable, colour.

Who / what are some style inspirations you look to?

I’m attracted to colour.
