Michael Fassbender has admitted that he likes to have fun on set when he is not filming.

The actor takes on the role of literary hero Edward Rochester this week as a new adaptation of Jane Eyre hits the big screen.

And the actor reveals that he doesn't like being to serious between takes - and that sometimes helps when he is back in character.

Speaking to the Press Association he said: "I kind of like to do that. Especially when you're dealing with a period piece or a heavy piece that is dealing with Victorian England.

"At the time there are certain etiquettes that you have to incorporate and respect but you don't want to get bogged down by them and I like to go into a scene relaxed and lose, and if you've got a partner who's comfortable and confident to allow that then you can discover things.

"You want to keep yourself as aware as possible and as open as possible and see what happens together. And if you have a good spark going into the scene, then you carry that energy into the scene."

And Fassbender has had a very busy week promoting both A Dangerous Method and Shame at the Venice Film Festival.

Jane Eyre is out now.
