With many across the country struggling to pay energy bills as cold weather grips the nation, people are using zany techniques to keep the temperature up - including using their beloved animal companions as "personal heaters".

Some are opting to heat their clothes in a microwave, while others eat loads of hot curries and even carry hot potatoes in their pockets.

People are also stuffing newspapers and magazines into their clothing in a bid to beat the cold snap.

It comes as a poll by PepsiCo showed 37 per cent of Britons are finding unique and quirky ways to ensure they don't freeze this winter.

Rob Pothier, a spokesperson for the company, said: "It's dark, gloomy and cold, so it's no wonder Brits are using quirky techniques to stay warm."
