A win for our favourite sports team gives longer-lasting happiness than hearing the words 'I love you'.

Research has revealed that declarations of love from a romantic partner make people feel good for an average of four hours but a sporting triumph gives a feeling of delight that lasts nine minutes longer.

Spending time with family offers people the longest-lasting source of joy (four hours and 33 minutes) and is closely followed by the glee people get from booking a holiday (four hours and 13 minutes).

Other sources of joy include finishing a workout, bagging a bargain and walking in nature.

The findings revealed that six in ten Brits preferred simple pleasures to grand gestures.

The research was commissioned by credit card provider Capital One, who have partnered with former Team GB athlete Greg Rutherford, to celebrate the opening of Happe Cafe – the UK's first dopamine-inducing cafe that is designed to give people a mood boost.

Rutherford said: "Everyone is feeling the pinch of the surging cost of living, with spending on experiences one of the first things to be sacrificed. I’m pleased to be working with Capital One UK to spread a little happiness by launching an experience with a difference. Don’t forget to try the apple crumble cake – my personal fave happiness-inducing treat on the menu!"
