I first heard about Skinny Bitch when I watched a segment with Ellen DeGeneres on why she became vegan and she happened to mention this book as part of her decision making process- so I had to seek it out.

Skinny Bitch

Skinny Bitch

Skinny Bitch does not beat around the bush- it certainly is a no-nonsense book, offering the kind of tough love that your mother gives you if you put on a few pounds and then takes it one step further.

But these women somehow don't offend the way someone close to you might by saying the things they do- because they back up every instruction with carefully researched evidence. The answer to why you should avoid meat is right there- you just have to read on and keep on absorbing the information they have condensed down for you.

Starting with the more obvious things we should avoid like sugar, then proving why carbs are not all that bad after all- they then get into the nitty gritty of what meat actually contains.

The more I read, the more I regretted ever putting the stuff near my mouth and I'm sure I'm not alone here. After a thorough justification of why the plant based diet is the way forward, the authors offer a plan to follow to ease you into this new lifestyle- and if you feel yourself deviating- you can read the most horrifying segments of the book again to remind yourself why you are doing this. It is an ongoing process- not something you read and resign to your book shelf.

I am not normally a fan of tough love- but it's tough for a reason and what might seems glaringly obvious makes much more sense when these ladies are telling it. People tend to desensitise themselves to slaughterhouse practices- this book makes you sit up and imagine it in graphic detail.

After watching the documentary Earthlings- everything in this book simply backed up what was captured in that footage. If we all pull back the curtain of clever marketing that depicts these animals grazing on lush green grass in some remote farm or producing eggs in a spacious hay laden barn- we finally see the reality. And I can guarantee once you have seen what's behind it- you will never be able to erase such images from your mind.

An excellent book to get you started on your vegan journey, it's slick, empowering and educational- an absolute must for anyone adopting this way of life.
