Bespoke meal plans are a dime-a-dozen nowadays, so new businesses have to do something truly special to stand out from the crowd. Love Yourself are hoping that there's still a gap in the market to fill, offering what they describe as "a premium healthy meal delivery service that combines well-rounded nutrition and diverse flavours, to make eating healthier and delicious food as easy and convenient as possible."

Of course, rather than just taking their word for it, we decided to check out what a day-and-a-half might offer, to see if all of the right boxes have been ticked. For us, it was a bit of a mixed bag.

Here’s how our meal plan looked:

Friday

  • Baked Oats with Dark Chocolate – breakfast
  • Sweet Potato Hummus with Carrot Snacks – snack
  • Jerk Cod with a Mango Salsa – lunch
  • Chocolate Brownie – snack
  • Hearty Lentil Stew – dinner

Saturday

  • Spinach, Tomato and Mozzarella Baked Eggs with Salad – breakfast
  • Turkey with Spring Vegetables - lunch
  • Buckwheat Pancake with Lemon Sauce – snack

What was noticeable straight from jump was the way in which the food was packaged. The pancake with lemon sauce for example, had leaked out of the box in which it was supposed to be contained.

Those boxes themselves were drained of all colour. It’s something that’s been done to ensure a sustainable approach, with as little a use of plastic as possible, but with a dash of colour here and there, the whole experience may be elevated.

Fortunately, the food itself was a real success for the most-part. There’s a lot of variety when it comes to the dishes you’ll be offered and, a lot of them are fun to make.

You can really tell that the kitchen tasked with coming up with these meal ideas had a lot of passion going into their food; unsurprising when it’s headed up by Chef Michal Snela, who trained under Marcus Wareing and has experience in some of the country's finest Michelin Star kitchens.

Flavour isn’t compromised for health and nutrition; it can actually be fun to eat well and it doesn’t all have to be tasteless morsels of nothing.

What is most accessible about the plans offered by Love Yourself - especially in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis - is the wide range that are available. There are 13 calorie-controlled, ever-changing meal plans on offer at a range of price points, so that the majority of people who would be interested in this sort of thing can make their entry point more personalised and suitable for their budget.

As with all bespoke plans of this nature, any one person’s opinion is going to be subjective. It really is a case of having to try it out for yourself to see if it’s going to fit into your schedule and be something you want to continue. We’d certainly recommend giving it a go! There’s something on the menu for everybody.
