Minimalist dressing doesn’t have to entail a tightly curated wardrobe in varying shades of black like social media may lead us to believe. Instead, it can be one of the simplest yet most powerful methods to express your personal style in the most effortless way possible. With pieces that stay contemporary no matter what the era, minimalist fashion is far from boring.

Minimalism on Female First

Whether you’re already embracing an effortlessly put-together wardrobe or only just jumping on the minimalist train, Alice Rowen Hall, Creative Director at Pink Boutique, shares her seven ways to embrace the fashion trend that will undoubtedly stand the test of time.

Nail the basics

Having basic pieces you can wear time and time again is crucial for the foundations of a minimalist wardrobe. Think timeless basics in neutral colours such as a white shirt, a fitted pair of black leather trousers and staple ankle boots that you can easily combine with other pieces to create effortlessly chic outfits no matter what it is you’re dressing for.

Choose a colour palette

If you like patterns or colours, include them! One of the most common myths in minimalist fashion is that your wardrobe needs to be purged of any form of hue in order to be versatile and adaptable. However, by sticking to a primarily neutral colour base with occasional pops of colour, your bright pieces will look much more striking, and who wouldn’t want that?

The art of layering

Layering doesn’t just have to be in the sense of layering pieces. It can also mean the layering of different fabrics, which is essential if dressing in an entirely monochrome outfit! For example, combining hard and soft fabrics such as leather trousers with a knitted jumper or satin cami top will not only add dimension to an outfit but will immediately make it look more expensive.

Pick a focal point

Minimalism doesn’t have to mean boring, if you want to make a minimalist outfit more compelling, pick a focal point. Wear a simple pair of black leatherette trousers with a statement jacket or draw attention to your waist with a jewelled belt or peplum style top. Add volume to your streamlined silhouette with puff sleeves, a waterfall cut or a dipped hemline to add drama.

Play with makeup

The perfect way to polish off any minimal outfit (especially those consisting of only black and white) is to add a pop of colour through makeup. Be brave and try out that over lined red lip look you’ve been seeing all over Instagram, or take some time to master the cat-eye flick. Not only is this a fun way to play with colour but it’s the perfect opportunity to try something new!

Jewellery

Perfecting simple jewellery can go a long way when it comes to minimalist styling. Whether silver or gold is your preference, dainty classic pieces will perfect literally any outfit. On nights out, spruce up your little black dress with a pair of tassel earrings or a statement necklace. A classic watch can also be the perfect finishing piece.

Stand-out accessories

Incorporating some statement accessories can add an instant personality stamp if wearing a simple outfit. Think a colour-pop clutch bag or a statement pair of boots featuring studs, pearls or patent.
