Over the years, the Bond girls have become just as iconic and essential to the film franchise as 007 himself and we have seen some great actresses take on this role.

Rachel Weisz

However, the role of the Bond girl has transformed over the sixty year history of the Bond movies; from piece of eye-candy to strong and well-rounded female characters.

In Spectre, Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydoux have become the latest 'Bond girls' and we take a look at some of the British actresses that we would like to see in the franchise going forward.

- Rachel Weisz

Rachel Weisz is one of the best British actresses around and I would love to see her in the Bond franchise - but perhaps not while husband Daniel Craig is 007.

An actress like Weisz could bring real gravitas and depth to the 'Bond girl' role - much like Eva Green did in Casino Royale. For me, Green is one of the best and most interesting Bond girls and Wesiz really could carry on that tradition.

It is important that this role is more than just a piece of skirt and, while Weisz is of course very beautiful, she would just bring so much more to this kind of character.

It would also be great to see some older actresses in this franchise - we are seeing Monica Bellucci in Spectre - and I think that is a very welcome direction; the 'Bond girl' does not just have to simply be a twenty-something.

Weisz is no stranger to the blockbuster with the likes of The Mummy, The Bourne Legacy and Oz the Great and Powerful under her belt and I think that she would be a terrific addition to this popular film series.

- Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan is one of the most in demand actresses currently working in Hollywood and is one of cinema's brightest stars. Appearing in a Bond movie may not be the most obvious career choice for Mulligan... but that is why she would be a great choice.

We are not use to see Mulligan can on blockbuster/action roles and I really would love to see her move away from drama and show off a different side to herself as an actress.

But her talent for developing characters and exploring different layers of those characters really would make her an intriguing and very different kind of 'Bond girl.'

Whether Mulligan would ever consider tackling this kind of role remains to be seen, but I would love to see her become a real blockbuster star. The Bond franchise really should take a chance on Mulligan as I think that she would be the perfect fit.

- Natalie Dormer

Natalie Dormer is another exciting talent who has made a name for herself in the likes of The Tudors and Game of Thrones before landing bigger roles on the big screen.

While we have seen her in The Hunger Games franchise more recently as Cressida, a role in Bond would well and truly see her star rocket and make her a household name.

Throughout her career we have seen Dormer take on feisty and strong female characters, such as Anne Boleyn, Margarey Tyrell and Cressida and it is this that would make her the perfect 'Bond girl.'

Not only would it be great to see her really throw herself into a major action role, but she would be more than a match for Bond and I would love to see her come face to face with 007.

Not only does Dormer look the part, but she is a terrific actress and it would be very exciting to see her land a big role in a major franchise.

- Emily Blunt

During her career, Emily Blunt is an actress who has shown of her dramatic and comedic skills and become one of the best British actresses around. However, in 2014 she starred in Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise and showed that she could tackle action roles as well.

She is terrific in Edge of Tomorrow and is as strong and as fierce a character as Cruise - their action sequences really are fantastic. Blunt was also the original choice to take on the role of Black Widow, before be forced to leave the project due to a scheduling conflict.

Sicario has seen her explore another strong female role and I would to see her take on a 'Bond girl' who can take care of herself - she absolutely would not be a damsel in distress.

I have always liked Blunt as a comedic actress - she is terrific in The devil Wears Prada - and it would be great to see some humour brought to the 'Bond girl' role and I think that Blunt would do this perfectly.

- Felicity Jones

Felicity Jones is another actress who has been making a splash in the last few years with the likes of Albatross, The Invisible Woman, and The Theory of Everything under her belt - demonstrating that she is a wonderful dramatic actress.

Much like Carey Mulligan, Jones is perhaps not the first name that springs to mind when you think about British actresses who would be perfect as a 'Bond girl.' However, it would be great to see her tackle a very different kind of role.

Jones is set to step into the world of the blockbuster for the first time with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is currently filming, and I cannot wait to see her in an action/CGI type blockbuster film.

Jones is a beautiful and versatile actress and the Bond franchise would make her an even bigger star. While she has enjoyed critical acclaim, a role in a Bond film would truly make her a household name.

Felicity Jones

- Emilia Fox

Emilia Fox is a British actress who has already enjoyed a career that has spanned twenty years and seen her mix film and television roles with great success.

Fox has always tackled roles with depth and substance and I would love to see her bring that intensity and intelligence to the Bond franchise.

I would also like to see Fox tackle a blockbuster role as it is something we have not seen her do during her two decade career.

As with Weisz, I like the fact that Fox is an older actress and I think she would bring something very different to a Bond girl compared to someone in their twenties. As a female audience member, it would be great to see a 'Bond girl' that is a little more real.

Spectre is out now.
