Mark Wahlberg in Broken City

Mark Wahlberg in Broken City

Mark Wahlberg is one of the most versatile actors working in Hollywood to day as he can move easily from comedy to action to biopic.

To celebrate the release of Broken City on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download from 24th June we’ve compiled a list of films starring actor Mark Wahlberg.

From teen idol to an Oscar nominated actor, Wahlberg’s performances have transformed him into one of Hollywood’s most bankable leading men.

- Boogie Nights (1997) represents a major turning point in the career of Wahlberg. Playing as Eddie Adams and on the verge of dropping out of high school, Adams meets Rick Horner, who works in the adult film industry.

Adams is morphed into a rising actor by the name of Dirk Diggler and begins his life and adventures in California and the pornography industry between the 1970s and 1980s.

Critics praised Wahlberg for his range and abilities as an actor and he has since moved on to other roles that equally demonstrate this.

Boogie Nights

- The Departed (2006) won four Oscars. Wahlberg was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance as Dignam.

Working alongside the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and director Martin Scorsese, the cast wages an ongoing battle between the police and an Irish-American organized crime syndicate in Boston.

Representatives from each group are assigned to infiltrate the opposing organizations to gather intelligence on the daily operations, but when there is a rising suspicion of each operative’s double life the race to find the mole becomes a dangerous situation for all.

The movie was both a critical and a commercial hit as it went on to with the Best Picture Oscar.

The Departed

- Max Payne (2008) features Wahlberg as Max Payne, a New York Police Department detective whose family was murdered. The murderer was not arrested.

Years later, Payne continues his search for the murderer by being transferred to the cold case office. Teaming with his ex-partner on the force and a worker at the pharmaceutical company where his wife worked, Payne begins his search.

Meanwhile, a drug on the streets is killing people. When a woman dies of the drug, her sister, armed and dangerous, searches for Payne after he is the last to see her alive.

Sadly this was not to be a success for Wahlberg as it was universally panned by the critics and struggled at the box office.

- The Fighter (2010) stories the life and early career of boxer 'Irish' Micky Ward, played by Wahlberg.

Under the training of his brother, played by Christian Bale, Ward works his way up the ladder to win the world light weight welterweight title. Following his win, Ward becomes a professional boxer in the 1980s.

The Fighter was a passion project for Wahlberg and he had been connected to the film for quite some time.

It was a great performance for the actor and the film went on to be nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture.

A sequel is believed to be in the works with Wahlberg set to reprise the central role.

The Fighter

- Ted (2012) features Wahlberg flexing his comedic talent. John (Wahlberg) makes a Christmas miracle happen by bringing his one and only friend to life - his teddy bear Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane).

The two grow up together and John must then choose to stay with his girlfriend (played by Mila Kunis) or keep his friendship with his crude and extremely inappropriate teddy bear.

Ted was the comedy smash of 2012 as it went on to gross in excess of $549 million at the global box office. A sequel is in the works.

- Broken City (2013) shows Wahlberg as ex-police officer turned private detective, Billy Taggart.

Taggart is offered $50,000 by the Mayor to investigate his wife over suspicions that she is having an affair. Acting as the eyes and ears of the mayor, Taggart also becomes a scapegoat in the larger scheme of the Mayor’s life.

Double-crossed, Taggart seeks revenge and justice, becoming a force to be reckoned with and a living nightmare for the Mayor. In a city full of lies, revenge is the only form of justice.
