With the new movie The Batman hitting the big screen this week (March 4th, 2022), the hype train is fully underway, as the stars of the film chat about what audiences can expect from the latest take on Bruce Wayne's vigiliante superhero, the Dark Knight.

In this adaptation, we'll see acting genius Andy Serkis take on the iconic role of Alfred Pennyworth. Serving as the butler to billionaire orphan Bruce, he has in the past been somebody who has served as a father figure to the crime fighter. This time round however, things are going to be different.

Speaking with Digital Spy, Serkis revealed that The Batman will be a 'fresh take' on the character of Alfred, explaining: "He is an ex-soldier. He's worked for the secret service, but one thing he isn't, is a father or possess the emotional toolbox to be a father. That is really what's at the core of this telling of the tale of our version of their relationship and I'm thankful that it is a fresh view, really."

Seeing exactly how Alfred's relationship with Robert Pattinson's take on Bruce Wayne works out, is going to be interesting. Though we've seen dark and gritty portrayals of the characters involved in the past, this new rendition could be the most exciting to-date.

We already know that Alfred and Bruce will have a rather cold relationship when The Batman begins; exactly how they begin to rebuild upon those fractures is something we imagine will play central to the film's narrative.

Their bond is integral to Batman's success and so, it's just a matter of time before the pieces in that relationship click into place.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman is one of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2022, having been pushed back a number of times due to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to disruptions in filming and production.

At almost three hours runtime, a lot of work has clearly gone into what is a passion project for those working on it. We can't wait to see how it all turns out and if early reviews are anything to go by, it's going to be a must-watch.

The Batman comes to cinemas across the UK on March 4th, 2022.
