J.J. Abrams says that he would love to direct Star Trek 3 and he will be involved with the movie in some way.

The director rebooted the Star Trek franchise back in 2009 and now he is set to be at the helm of the re-launch of Star Wars.

So the next couple of years are going to be very busy for Abrams and he says if he cannot director Star Trek 3 he will certainly produce.

Speaking to the Press Association the actor said: "No matter what if there is a third film Bad Robot and I will be producing the film, so we'll definitely be involved in it.

"Depending on schedules I'll see if I'm able to direct it but it would be a very bittersweet thing to have someone else direct these amazing actors - it was an incredible privilege to do so."

Star Trek Into Darkness hits the big screen this week and is one of the most anticipated movies of the year.

Abrams is back in the director's chair for the film - his first movie since Super 8 - while Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch are all on board.

Star Wars VII is now set to be the director's focus as the first movie has a release date of 2015.

Star Trek Into Darkness is released 9th May.
