X-Men: Apocalypse Tops U.S. Box Office

X-Men: Apocalypse has seen off the challenge from Alice Through the Looking Glass to top the U.S. box office.

X-Men: Apocalypse is the third X-Men film to star James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence and sees Bryan Singer back in the director's chair.

The movie took $65 million in its opening weekend to topple The Angry Birds Movie from the number one spot and hold off Alice Through The Looking Glass.

X-Men: Apocalypse has opened to mixed reviews but, so far, the film has grossed over $265 million at the global box office.

Alice Through the Looking Glass, which is the sequel to Alice in Wonderland, had to settle for second as the film opened this weekend. Directed by James Bobin, the movie sees Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp reprise the roles of Alice and the Mad Hatter.

The film took $28.1 million over the weekend to take the #2 spot to be the second highest new entry inside the top ten this weekend.

The Angry Bird Movie slipped two places to number three while Captain America: Civil War was also down two this week at four. Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising rounded off the top five - slipped two spots from last week's number three.

The Jungle Book fell out of the top five for the first time as it slipped a sing place to number six. The Nice Guys was this week's biggest faller as it dropped three places from four to seven.

Money Monster was also down two at eight while period drama Love & Friendship was the only climber - up from fourteen to number nine.

Disney animation film Zootropolis rounded off the top ten, slipping to spots from last week's number eight.
