Starzplay has revealed the full-length trailer, as well as character images, for a brand new limited series that will debut on the streaming service next month (April, 2022).
Gaslit is set to be a modern version of Watergate, that centres around the untold tale and figures of the scandal. From Nixon’s stumbling and opportunity-grabbing subordinates, to the crazed zealots only aiding the crimes.
The series will follow Martha Mitchell, who is played by Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman, Notting Hill), a larger than life personality who sometimes lets her mouth get her in trouble.
Martha is, as well as being married to Nixon’s Attorney General, John Mitchell (Sean Penn, The Gunman), an Arkansan socialite who loves the spotlight.
In spite of her love for parties, she is the first ever person to sound the alarm, publicly at that, and draw attention to Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal; this causes both the Presidency, and her personal life to take a hit.
With him being the Attorney General, and hopelessly in love with his wife, John Mitchell will have to choose between his wife, and the President of the United States.
The upcoming series is based on the first season of a podcast titled Slow Burn, which was created and executive produced by Robbie Pickering.
As well as Roberts and Penn, Gaslit also stars Dan Stevens as John Dean, Betty Gilpin as Mo Dean, Shea Whigham as G. Gordon Liddy and Darby Camp as Marty Mitchell.
Other crew members include Matt Ross, who directed and executive produced; Sam Esmail, via his overall deal with UCP and Chad Hamilton served as executive producers under their production banner Esmail Corp; Roberts executive produced under her banner Red Om Films, along with co-executive producers Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill.
Anonymous Content and Slate’s Gabriel Roth and Josh Levin also executive produced. Leon Neyfakh, who created the podcast, consulted on the project.
Gaslit will be available to watch on Starzplay on April 24th, 2022.
