Christopher Columbus High School hired the animal - which was kept in a small cage and videoed frantically pacing the perimeter by students - for the event and has been slammed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for putting the wild animal in a stressful situation.

And teens at the event held by the private Catholic school for boys were able to pose with lemurs, a parrot and a fox which were also hired for the event.

Principal David Pugh later apologised for the use of the animal in the prom celebration.

He said: ''We recognize this decision has offended some and for that we apologize.

''Although it was in a controlled environment and handled by professionals approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation, we understand how some individuals may be concerned.''
