A study has revealed that those who prefer bitter tastes are more likely to display alarming personality traits such as psychopathic tendencies.
953 Americans took part in the research, conducted by the University of Innsbruck in Austria, and were quizzed on how much they enjoyed sweet, sour, salty and bitter tastes before being given a survey analysing if they had narcissistic, aggressive, or sadist behavioural tendencies.
The team found a clear link between "increased enjoyment of bitter foods and heightened sadistic proclivities".
The researchers wrote: "In two studies, we investigated how bitter taste preferences might be associated with anti-social personality traits.
"The results of both studies confirmed the hypothesis that bitter taste preferences are positively associated with malevolent personality traits, with the most robust revelation to everyday sadism and psychopathy."
