Stereotyping cannabis smokers as dull and unmotivated is unfair, scientists have argued.

A study has found that stoners are just as likely to enjoy time with friends and family, embrace learning new things and follow through with tasks as non-drug users.

The researchers asked 274 teen and adult cannabis smokers from London to rate aspects of their personality and enjoyment of life and found no difference in responses compared with similar-aged people who did not smoke spliffs.

The study concluded that the portrayal of stoners on screen - such as Jeff Bridges' The Dude in the 1998 film 'The Big Lebowski' - is not reflected in real life.

Martine Skumlien, from Cambridge University, said: "We're so used to seeing 'lazy stoners' on our screens we don't ask whether they're an accurate representation. Our work implies that this is a lazy stereotype."
