The unnamed 59-year-old man was working at a New Jersey cemetery when the sides of the 8-foot-deep grave caved in as he was measuring the plot.

He was left up to his knees in dirt for about 30 minutes during the incident before his cries for help were heard by colleagues.

A local policeman claimed that the man hadn't measured the grave safely.

Sergeant Vincent Auteri told NorthJersey.com ''They did not utilise any shoring when they were digging the grave.

''He decided to jump in nevertheless.''

The worker was pulled to safety and taken to a local hospital, where he complained of back and chest pain, according to local media.
