Derek Morgan and his wife Deborah thought that the relic would be welcomed at Castletown D-Day Centre in Dorset but worried staff put the explosive into a World War II tank and called in the bomb squad.

Police told local residents to stay indoors as the grenade was destroyed with a controlled explosion.

Deborah told The Sun newspaper: "My husband was left some war artefacts by his father. He'd been assured the grenade had been made safe."

Deborah added that she and her partner were horrified by the chaos caused by their gesture.

She said: "We are mortified about the disruption it caused the museum, local traders, people on the cruise liner, holidaymakers and the people of Weymouth."
