Tom Adams and his wife Marlo were kayaking on the Snake River in the US state of Idaho when his boat overturned, causing him to lose his phone, keys and wallet.

Adams contacted the Bingham County Search and Rescue Dive Team, who agreed to search for his lost items for a training exercise.

He told the East Idaho News: "They use opportunities like this to practice and get more dive time in to prepare for the real calls, and more important events such as lifesaving."

Adams explained that it took around 20 minutes until one of the divers retrieved his keys and iPhone - which was still sounding its alarm.

He said: "It was still alarming from my Sunday morning wake-up call reminder."
