Wilbur Beast triumphed in the mayoral election of Rabbit Hash with over 13,000 votes and became the most popular canine candidate in the town's history.

The French bulldog is not the first pooch to lead the town as it has been electing dogs as mayors since the 1990s.

Not every dog is allowed to enter the ballot, however, as they must be able to chase a rabbit from their home to the Rabbit Hash town centre within one hour to become eligible for election.

Wilbur Beast's owner Amy Noland told Sky News: "It’s an exciting adventure and a deeply meaningful cause to preserve the river hamlet town of Rabbit Hash.

"The town welcomes visitors and will continue to provide fun events for all ages to come to experience the nostalgia and charm we have to offer."
